Tools – Free Design’s Free Dimension
August 23rd, 2006
A very interesting and unique product is currently available for exploration. In an increasing awareness of digital tools that can advance the process of communication of ideas in digital form, I highly recommend a look at this new modeling program.
Free Dimension by Free Design Inc. is a new modeling program that employs a technological breakthrough, “N-Sided Surface (NSS)”. With this new paradigm in design modeling, you are free to manipulate curves that describe complex surfaces that include curves and hard edges. The description of form is more like sculpting using Bezier curves with powerful manipulators and additional form tools that allow deformation and other types of shaped action to make changes to a digital model.
I like the simplicity of presentation of the program to convey a pure sense of form that can be grasped easily in conceptual design work.
Free Dimension is another tool to add to your digital tool shed and keep a close eye on this technology as it matures. I would like to see a refinement of the interface, more visibility of some of the more obscure tools that are very powerful. One of them is where you can cut holes through an object. Another item is four sided polygonal output on export so that the models fit into a pipeline nicely.
There is not a price given for the product at the moment.
